Houston, Texas, is so enormous that you can fly over it for miles and still see nothing but neighborhoods, highways, shopping centers, and buildings stretching toward the horizon. But the most surprising thing about Houston isn't its skyline. It's how much land the city actually occupies. With approximately 2.4 million residents, Houston is America's fourth-largest city by population, behind New York City, Los Angeles, and Chicago. Yet its physical footprint tells a completely different story. 📍 HOUSTON IS BIGGER THAN MOST PEOPLE REALIZE The city of Houston covers roughly 640 square miles of land, making it more than twice the land area of New York City, which occupies about 300 square miles. But here's the catch: New York City has more than three times Houston's population. That means Houston spreads a much smaller population across a significantly larger area. And that's just the city itself. The Greater Houston metropolitan area covers roughly 10,000 square miles, extending across a vast portion of southeastern Texas. That's an area comparable to the entire state of Massachusetts. Not all of that land is urbanized, but the developed parts form one of the largest metropolitan landscapes in the United States. 🚗 A CITY BUILT AROUND DISTANCE Houston's enormous size becomes even more obvious when you look at its highways. Interstate 610, better known as the 610 Loop, forms a roughly 38-mile ring around the city's central districts. But that isn't even Houston's outermost major ring road. Beltway 8, also known as the Sam Houston Tollway along most of its route, forms another loop approximately 88 miles long. And farther out, the Grand Parkway, or State Highway 99, is being developed as a much larger orbital highway, with its planned full route extending roughly 180 miles. #america #geography #houston
