@channelnewsasia: Indonesia has tested dropping 2.4 tonnes of dry ice over South Sumatra in an effort to tackle haze caused by forest and land fires. The two-day operation from Oct 15 to 16 aimed to disperse smoke trapped near the ground and improve visibility. Indonesia's National Disaster Management Agency (BNPB) is assessing the technique's effectiveness and may continue operations until rain falls and air quality improves. If successful, the method could also be used in other haze-affected areas. #Indonesia #IndonesiaNews #Haze

Challenges and Constraints While effective, the widespread use of dry ice presents several practical constraints: Cost and Logistics: The storage and transportation of dry ice require extremely low temperatures and carry high costs compared to standard water. Peat Layer Factors: Its effectiveness still depends on factors such as peat thickness, existing moisture content, depth of the embers, and the method of delivering the material precisely into the underground fire zone. Ecological Impact: The large-scale use of extreme-temperature materials must first be evaluated to ensure it does not adversely affect other soil microorganisms.

the government wanted to use inefficient and ineffective ways as long as possible to buy times. first, they use yam powder, now dry ice?? they be using anything except water just to buy TIME.

Dry ice being released to combat the haze? Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide (CO₂). It turns directly into gas without melting into liquid. Although it may look like a way to clear the haze, it does not remove the pollutants already present in the air. It’s like dropping a bomb on the environment, potentially affecting citizens’ health slowly but surely.

thats the worst thing to do with intense fire. hydrogen and oxygen will separate. oxygen will feed the fire

Went to read up on this. Dry ice doesn't help contain or fight the fire directly, but helps with something called "temperature inversion"?, which long story short, affects ground visibility and toxicity, allowing the firefighters to fight more effectively. Nice! I learned something new today. Still a long way to go, but we will take it.

Using dry ice has its limitations, it nay helps to suppress surface fires but the main challenge is Peatland fires can continue burning underground even after the visible flames have been extinguished. Combustion will continue below and potentially reigniting when exposed to oxygen. The key issue is depth and coverage. Dry ice placed on the surface is unlikely to extinguish an extensive underground peat fire by itself. It is not a substitute for reaching and cooling the burning peat.

The world must boycott all products containing Indonesian palm oil. Crush the share prices of public listed palm oil companies. They're destroying the Borneo lungs of the world and precious endangered animals all the the sake of planting palm oil cheaply!

Dry ice is a reasonable agent for small fires. Against a huge wildfire, its suppression is too brief, too expensive, too logistically fragile, and too dangerous to crews. Good luck to them. 😂
