@skyelinksmedia: GUAYAQUIL, ECUADOR — A Catholic priest has d!ed after a massive wooden crucifix mounted above the altar suddenly fell on him while he was celebrating Holy Mass at a church in Guayaquil, Ecuador. The tragic incident occurred on Saturday, October 17, 2026, at Our Lady of Perpetual Help Church, also known as Nuestra Señora del Perpetuo Socorro. The service was being livestreamed on social media when the accident happened, exposing worshippers watching online to the shocking scene. The priest was identified as Father Patricio Alfredo Sánchez Molinari, who served as parish priest at the church. His death was subsequently confirmed by the Archdiocese of Guayaquil. How the tragedy happened According to reports published by the Associated Press and other international news organisations, Father Sánchez was conducting Mass when the large crucifix detached from the wall behind him, above the altar. Footage of the service reportedly shows the heavy religious structure falling and striking the priest on the head. He did not appear to notice the crucifix falling before it hit him. The sudden impact triggered panic among members of the congregation. Worshippers could be heard shouting for help, with one voice urgently calling for an ambulance. Several people moved to assist the priest as the livestream continued. The broadcast subsequently ended, while news of the incident spread rapidly across social media. The footage has since attracted widespread attention because the tragedy occurred during a religious service in which worshippers had gathered for prayer. Church confirms priest's d£ath The Archdiocese of Guayaquil confirmed the d£ath of Father Sánchez in a statement released on Sunday, October 18. The archdiocese expressed grief over the loss and offered prayers for the priest's eternal rest, while extending its sympathy and solidarity to his religious community, family and friends. Father Sánchez was a member of the Congregation of the Most Holy Redeemer, commonly known as the Redemptorists. The Roman Catholic religious congregation was founded in 1732 and carries out missionary and pastoral work internationally. His d£ath has drawn attention to the sudden and tragic circumstances in which a priest lost his life while performing his religious duties. What caused the huge crucifix to fall? As of the latest reports reviewed on October 19, the precise cause of the accident had not been publicly established. It remains unclear whether the crucifix fell because of a problem with its wall fittings, deterioration of its supporting structure or another mechanical failure. These are possible explanations, not confirmed findings. The Associated Press reported that local authorities had not commented on the incident at the time of its report. No verified technical findings establishing the cause of the collapse were available in the sources reviewed. A tragedy witnessed by people online The fact that the Mass was being livestreamed made the incident particularly distressing for viewers who witnessed the sudden emergency in real time. The tragedy has also raised questions about the safe installation and maintenance of heavy objects mounted above areas where clergy and worshippers gather. However, there is no verified evidence that the crucifix was deliberately brought down or that the incident had any supernatural cause. It should be treated as a tragic accident unless credible information comes up. Our Take! As tributes and reactions continue, the major unanswered question is what caused the heavy crucifix to detach from the wall. Further official information would be needed to establish the circumstances surrounding the collapse. Skyelinksmedia will continue to distinguish confirmed facts from speculation as more reliable information becomes available. #Skyelinksmedia #Ecuador #WorldNews #CatholicChurch #BreakingNews
