@cami_ss_9_26: Before there was a "cowboy," there was the vaquero. 🐎 Long before Hollywood made the American West famous, the lands we now call Texas, California, New Mexico, and Arizona were part of Mexico. And the men working cattle across those wide, dry ranges had a name: vaqueros. Their tradition was born centuries earlier in colonial Mexico, where Indigenous and mestizo horsemen turned Spanish cattle herding into something entirely new. They learned to work huge herds across open land, often with little more than a horse, a rope, and skill passed from father to son. And that skill shaped everything that came after. The proof is in the words cowboys still use today: Lariat — from la reata Lasso — from lazo Rodeo — from rodear, "to round up" Ranch — from rancho Mustang — from mesteño Chaps — from chaparreras Buckaroo — widely believed to come from vaquero itself The western saddle with its sturdy horn? Developed from the Mexican saddle, built for roping cattle. When new settlers arrived in Texas and California, many learned ranching from the vaqueros who were already there. Over time, cowboy life grew into a story shared by many people Mexican, Indigenous, Black, Anglo, and more. But every story has a beginning. And for the cowboy, much of that beginning speaks Spanish. 🇲🇽 This isn't about taking anything away from anyone. It's about remembering the people who were there first — and whose skill still rides through the West today. #mexican #History #vaqueros #cowboys #cultura
