@devinherronplaas: It’s been a year and a half, and I feel like I still haven’t gotten the whole Brotdose and Frühstückspause thing down. What are you sending your kids to eat at school and what are you sending it in? #germany #deutschland

Just ask yourself what they would eat at home. Lot's of kids only eat very little before school, so they get a full breakfast to school (like a sandwich, a bit of fruit and veggies, a joghurt and maybe - if the school allows it - small sweets). I don't know anyone, who sends lunch, too. If it's too expensive, you might be elegible for financial aid with that. Otherwise I'd probably do another sandwich, some crackers and Dip and another round of veggies.

I love the one from dm, they are airtight, dishwasher safe and have a compartment for sauce or dip or a little bit of yoghurt. They also frequently habe 20% off coupons for them in the app

I think bread + fruit/veggies is the most typical Brotdose. Plus maybe a little snack like a small yogurt, cheese or nuts if you really want to. That’s how it was during my childhood anyway. I vividly remember how my friends and I always shared each other’s Brotdosen. I had a friend who didn’t like the snacks her mom packed her, but was absolutely crazy about vegetables. My mom wasn’t exactly happy when she found out that my friend had been eating all my veggies throughout elementary school, she really thought I had been doing so well getting in all those vitamins every day 😂

Mepal Brotdose works for me. Proper bread (as the name Brotdose suggests 😉), a bit of fruit and/or vegetable and maybe a little bit of protein (egg, sausage, babybell). Happy to send you very non-influencer pictures in a dm.

What about the good old German Stulle? It's de default Pausenbrot (as the Name suggest). You don't need 100 compartments. Maybe one more for sone cucumber sticks or a carrot

I’m American in germany. My 4 year old doesn’t love cold cheese or cold meats, so I bake veggie-packed waffles/muffins/pancakes/crepes. Batch cook and freeze extras. Always fresh fruit/veg (apple, berries, carrot, cucumber, Paprika mostly) and a Riegel bar/smoothie Chips/raisins box/dried fruit opt (eg apple rings, mango strips, dried strawberries) Sometimes when he’s in the mood for it, wursts/salami sticks/hard boiled egg.

I had those metal ones, two of them. One with 1-4 “Belegte Brote” depending on age. And one with always an apple + some sort of treat like Knoppers, Corny or Balisto

Are you not getting discount on the lunch for the kids? In hamburg I think it’s free for the third kid and up! On topic: We really like the mepal campus boxes, you can even order spare parts and accessories from their website, switch out designs etc. they can go in the dishwasher and are lightweight so you could even put 2 of them in the backpack. They’re not insulated and leakprood though.

maybe buy one of these for lunch and pack a sandwich and some fruit/vegetable and a protein (cheese, salami sticks, etc.) for lunch. and then another one for breakfast with just some fruit, a treat and possibly a yoghurt or vegetables or some granola. as a brand Mepal is great

I have two Boys in school. Traditional for Brotdose for Schulfrühstück is a Brot - a bread, pref. whole grain with savory on top, like cheese or coldcuts. To that you add some fruit what you have and depending on tastes. Also favorites: cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, bellpepper slices. Some people send cold little meatballs or an egg - anything the child likes. I comply to the no sugar rule at school, but send a small amount of healthy crackers from Alnatura. I swear by our stainless steel boxes ✌🏻Hope this helps.

sandwich in one box and some apple slices, cucumber and carrot sticks and cherry tomatoes in another box. done. some nuts maybe in a little box if it’s a long day. works better than the big ones with compartments imo

You choose which type of bread or roll the person likes, as well as what they would like on it. Do they want lettuce with their cold cuts or cheese, or would they prefer just cold cuts, just cheese, or perhaps an egg? Or maybe both cold cuts and cheese? How about a soft pretzel with butter for a change? It’s a good idea to let the children help decide, and some items can even be prepared the night before. You could also use two small containers: one for some fruit or vegetables, and the other for the bread or roll.

for (morning) break i send usually a sandwich or a pretzel with butter, some fruit, some veggies, sometimes a slice of cake or a muffin, sometimes leftovers (schitzel or meatloaf in a roll) or a yoghurt. the boxes we use are from dm (mepal i guess)

The Mepal boxes work quite well, they have one bigger side for a sandwich and than an inlay with two smaller boxes for fruits, veggies, nuts, crackers, etc.

Warum nicht einfach ein belegtes Brot und etwas Obst/Gemüse und ein Getränk? Kekse und andere Süßigkeiten sättigend ja nicht wirklich.

at least one Brot with Aufschnitt of their liking. For Variation choose different types of Brot (Sometimes Brötchen etc), then 2 different veggies and fruit (seasonal). If you have one more compartement do Something Special (Like babybel, Salami Sticks, olives, dried fruit or a Cookie If allowed)

German here – I don’t have Kids but I have five nieces and nephews who are in school. What my sil typically does is she gets a Brotdose from sistema or mepal and puts in a sandwich made from whole grain bread, some fruit and veg and maybe a sweet treat once in a while and for lunch she just takes a simple tupperware container and they take leftovers from the night before with them. But every school is different. Maybe befriend a parent and ask them what they usually pack! ☺️

I have seen a Lunch-box-set from lock&lock on TikTok, wich is werry simular to the ones we use. For my Kids its importend to have separete spaces so no smell or taste mixes throughout the day. They get Whole-grain bread with slices of cheese or meat usually with creamcheese or a vegetarian spread beneath, one compartment is filled with fruit, one with vegetables and they get a healthy treat (like nuts, yoghurt or a dip for the vegetables) for theire second breakfast. For lunch they mostly get samthing pasta related in a muesli-container with two seperate compartments (the second one holds a sweettreat as dessert). And on good days they get a simple lunchbox with something (waffles, cookies,..) for the "Vesper"-time (like teatime) in the afternoon.
