5 years ago my babygirl Amelia suffered through a life threatening epileptic episode. November 5th 2021. Amelia was playing in the living room and suddenly froze in a half squat position and began to drool. At this time in my life I was not yet a regulated EMT but I knew it was the early stage of a seizure attack. Leaving behind my phone and my shoes I picked her up and rushed to the car in hopes to get her to someone who could help her faster than an ambulance. I held her in my arms as she experienced full body convulsions while I drove to the nearest urgent care and trying to soothe her. I drove into opposing traffic and well above the speed limit reaching the urgent care in less than 2 minutes. I rushed inside to find no one in the lobby or at the desk as I screamed for help I ran through the halls ultimately deciding to enter the nurses station through a patients room. The nurses and doctors acted swiftly to help her. They handed me pair of trauma shears and told me to cut off her jeans. They used an adult crash cart to try to save her 2 year old body. She was completely blue. The only way I knew she was still alive…was because she was still convulsing. Very quickly paramedics arrived. Her seizure finally broke at that time before happening immediately again. This seizure would not stop on its own. We rushed her to the children’s trauma 1 hospital where I knew many of the staff. I stood by helplessly, barefoot and clutching on to her jeans I cut off moments before as I watched the hospital staff administer medication after medication until the seizure finally stopped. She was out. Which now meant they had to intubate her. This took 5 attempts, on the final attempt I finally broke into pieces on the floor. Terrified and helpless. It would 5 more days before I received answers. Amelia is diagnosed with Tuverous Sclerosis Complex. A genetic disorder that causes tumor growth in all vital organs. My genes caused this. When we finally made it home my gf dumps me because Amelia’s medical issues are “too much” and she never “wanted to be their mom”. Amelia has not had a seizure since that day. After lengthy stays at specialty hospitals we have her condition under control and pushed me to obtain my EMT license. This event changed me as a man and as a father. It changed how I train and taught me patience. She is now 7 and thriving. Life can be scary…be prepared. #story #storytime #memories #scary #hope
