Does AI read every letter, so it counts the 3 r's in "strawberry" right every time? ๐Ÿ“ Not this one. A language model doesn't get letters, it gets tokens: chunks of text from its vocabulary, each with an ID number. With Qwen2.5's official tokenizer, "strawberry" on its own is three chunks, "str" + "aw" + "berry". In the question "How many r's are in strawberry?" the word (with its space) is a single token, number 72600. The letters aren't in what the model is given. We asked a tiny local model (qwen2.5:0.5b, about half a billion parameters) that exact question 20 times on a Mac mini (ollama, seeds 1 to 20, default settings, rule for "right" written down before the first run). It answered 1, 2, 4, 5, 0, "no r's", or gave no number at all. Right: 1 out of 20, and that one said "strawberry" is spelled with "sฤr", "which means three". Meanwhile `grep -o r <<< strawberry | wc -l` printed 3, twenty times out of twenty. One tiny model, one question: bigger models often get this one right, and this test says nothing about them.
