Not all seizures involve shaking, convulsions, or losing consciousness. Temporal lobe seizures originate in the temporal lobe of the brain, an area involved in memory, emotions, and processing sensory information. An aura is actually a focal seizure itself and may occur alone or progress to impaired awareness or a bilateral tonic-clonic seizure. DIAGNOSIS: * Detailed neurological history * EEG to evaluate brain electrical activity * Brain MRI to identify possible structural abnormalities TREATMENT: Antiseizure medications are typically first-line treatment. Some patients with medication-resistant epilepsy may benefit from surgery or other specialized therapies. IMPORTANT: Smelling burning rubber when nothing is burning does NOT automatically mean you’re having a seizure. Migraines, nasal disorders, and other conditions can cause phantom smells. However, recurrent, unexplained episodes….especially when accompanied by deja vu, confusion, or altered awareness definitely warrant neurological evaluation. A first suspected seizure requires prompt medical assessment. A seizure lasting 5 minutes or longer, or repeated seizures without recovery, is a medical emergency. Remember: Sometimes a seizure doesn’t look like a seizure.
