Liam Bowes has been jailed after causing the death of a university student while driving under the influence of alcohol. The 37-year-old was sentenced to 12 years in prison at Teesside Crown Court after admitting causing death by dangerous driving and attempting to cover up the incident. The court heard that Bowes had been attending a birthday party where he consumed between eight and ten pints of beer along with several alcoholic shots. Despite the amount he had drunk, he chose to drive home in his Volkswagen Golf during the early hours of 26 October 2025. While driving through Durham, Bowes approached a pedestrian crossing at Neville’s Cross. Travelling at around 56 mph in a 40 mph zone, he ran a red traffic light and continued through the crossing. At the same time, Abigail Eggleston, a 22-year-old law student at Durham University, was crossing the road. Bowes’ car struck her while she was using the crossing. Emergency services attended the scene and she was taken to hospital in Newcastle, where she later d*ed from her injuries. Instead of stopping to help, Bowes left the scene of the collision. Prosecutors told the court he later abandoned the vehicle and set it on fire in an attempt to destroy evidence. When questioned by police, he initially claimed the car had been stolen before eventually admitting that he had been the driver. During sentencing, the judge described Bowes’ actions as reckless and irresponsible, stating that his decision to drive while heavily intoxicated had devastating consequences. In statements read to the court, Abigail’s family described her as a bright, kind and hardworking young woman with a promising future ahead of her. Her death has left her family and friends heartbroken, and the loss has deeply affected the wider community at Durham University, where she was remembered as someone who brought warmth and positivity to those around her. Alongside his prison sentence, Bowes was banned from driving for 18 years and must pass an extended driving test before he can legally drive again. #truecrime #truecrimetok #horror #murder #driving
