I don’t think she was jealous, the mum went through the same thing and fell in love with a “less wealthy” man. I don’t think she was really trying to protect her either and do the same thing as what the mums parents did when she was younger, not let her marry the less wealthy man. She probably thought it was best for her daughter because she went through the same experience and chose the outcome of her marrying Allie’s father.

If y’all watch the movie you will see why the mom is the way she is . She showed her the man she once loved at her age and if she had chosen him ally would have never existed and the luxury life . The mom may have not loved her dad like that one man but she knew she chose right man . Her heart was in the right place she just was trying to protect her daughter
