@strawberrining: At first family member is on the call light for simple stuff like water and blankets but starts asking for more like picking up her doordash order, dropping her off at the main entrance bc she has a dialysis appointment at 5am, and needing to use the toilet. At this point it’s like having an extra patient. I understand having grace and being kind but there comes a point where the family member can have a safety event due to being blind and requiring assistance. I let my manager know family is getting to be a little too much and explained. Manager was unaware of this and said it’s 11pm so we’re not going to kick her out but tomorrow people will talk to her. I come in the next day (Saturday), and she is still there. No one talked to her. No managers on the floor on weekends. She asked to use the toilet again around 4am and that’s when I told charge to let house supervisor know. I was feeling pressured from my coworkers telling me that if she falls, it’ll be on me. House supervisor came and talked to her saying she has to go in the morning, no exceptions. House manager then talked to the rest of us nurses mostly directing it to me about how this was even allowed in the first place. I defended myself saying I let my manager know the first day I had her what was going on and that whoever was supposed to talk to her this morning never did. I’m feeling a ton of emotions like guilt for the family member, irritated at days for not contacting supervisor when I told her during report that someone should be coming, irritated that it was allowed before I even had the patient (pt spent a night in ED before being transfer on my unit during dayshift), mad at the supervisor for making me feel like I didn’t do enough, annoyed at my aid for being reluctant to help me with family member to and from toilet #nurse #nursing #rn #nursetok #hospital

Someone dumped them there. Escalate to manager who may call APS.

I've actually had something similar to this happen. Per our policy we can't help someone with ADLs that is not the patient. Either A they have to go home/with someone else to provide care. If there is no one else to care for the family member at home we've had the family member admitted to the hospital.

you have to let the supervisor know. they will need to call the family and let them know that we can't care for that family member. they are a liability unless someone else is gonna stay there with them. family members will do this bc they want a break.

You have to have a backbone bedside. No one is going to advocate for you except yourself. Going forward if something is off bring it up repeatedly until something happens. As a charge nurse I would never let this happen

we're not allowed to help unless they're a patient. also if someone like this is there past visiting hours the charge nurse has to try and make them go home because its a liability if they fall

They cannot stay, The patient can not be responsible for someone while we are responsible for them. If no one is available, they can call protective services and they will place them until the patient is discharged. This is extreme though so, I wouldn't do this unless absolutely necessary. 2 person assist is necessary.

I was charge & had an issue with a pt wife with Alzheimer's during a snow storm. Wife was wandering into other pts rooms, family refused to come get her. I went toe to toe with the dr who expected the nurses to babysit her. That or keep the pt awake because when he slept is when she wandered. It did not end well.

They can either be admitted or go home. My ratio is 4 patients per nurse max on my floor.

They cannot stay without a private duty aide and family. It’s a liability to provide that level pf care to a non patient. It’s a real dump job by the family to leave her there alone

Unless they can take care of themselves, they are not allowed to stay. You are not allowed to provide any care to anyone That's not the patient. And that's for legal issues. It's pretty self explanatory

tell them to call whoever takes care of them at home and tell them to come pick them up because we can be liable for a non patient, plus how so we bill for that because baybee, I'm not taking on an additional person....BUTTT highly depends on the patient's situation.. like if mawmaw/pawpaw on their last leg and only lil timmy with the busted leg can be there there of course, absolutely. but if ya boo got a uti, laying up getting abx, you can most certainly wait at home

the happened 2 me once in 33 years if nursing. I worked nights the wife who was a family. Member had obvious dementia me and the other nurses in the ICU helped keep track of her social work came in in the morning and found her a place to stay. It wasn’t fun though.

What do they do at home? That’s what they need to do there. For liability reasons nurses aren’t allowed to help non patients do ADLs.

I had a patient with dementia and they abandoned his wife there with him who also had dementia so she went straight to the ER and also got admitted.
