Random fact #1 On January 26, 1972, a Yugoslav Airlines flight exploded mid-air over Czechoslovakia at 33,000 feet — roughly 6 miles up. A bomb had been placed on the plane by Croatian nationalists. Everyone on board was killed instantly or thrown from the wreckage. Except Vesna Vulović. She was a 22-year-old flight attendant who wasn’t even supposed to be on that flight — there was a scheduling mix-up with another employee who had the same name. She was working in the tail section of the plane when it blew apart, and the tail section stayed somewhat intact as it plummeted. She fell with the wreckage, not as a free-falling body, which is the only reason she had any chance. She hit a heavily snow-covered mountain slope in Czechoslovakia. A local villager — a former medic — found her first and kept her alive until help arrived. She was in a coma for 27 days. She had a fractured skull, three broken vertebrae, broken legs, and two broken ribs. Doctors said she should have been dead several times over. She recovered, went back to work for the airline, and became a national hero in Yugoslavia. She held the Guinness World Record for the highest fall survived without a parachute until she passed away in 2016. She said she had zero memory of the fall. Her first memory after the explosion was waking up in the hospital.
