@history.everything13: 3,000 YEARS OF HISTORY TURNED TO RUBBLE In 2015, the ancient Assyrian city of Nimrud in northern Iraq suffered major destruction during the conflict in the region. More than 3,000 years old, Nimrud had once been one of the great capitals of the Assyrian Empire. Its palaces, monumental sculptures and carved stone reliefs preserved the story of one of the most powerful civilizations of the ancient world. During the fighting, large parts of the archaeological site were deliberately damaged with heavy machinery and explosives. Many monuments that had survived for thousands of years were reduced to fragments. Today, archaeologists continue working to document and preserve what remains. Thousands of years survived.
