The Theodorus Spiral (or Pythagorean snail), first described by the ancient Greek mathematician Theodorus of Cyrene in the 5th century BC, is a sequence of contiguous right-angled triangles. Its core purpose was to serve as a geometric calculator for constructing irrational lengths, allowing ancient scholars to visually demonstrate and precisely measure numbers that cannot be expressed as simple fractions. The construction begins with a triangle whose shorter sides equal one, and each subsequent element is built upon the longest side of the previous one. By always adding a new outer side of the same fixed length of one, the spiral mechanically generates exact lines representing the values of consecutive square roots without using complex arithmetic. In its original form, the triangles complete a full turn and begin to overlap each other at the 17th step, which is exactly where Theodorus stopped his calculations. If you continue this mathematical process infinitely, the vertices of the figure smoothly approximate the shape of a continuous Archimedean spiral. #geometry #mathematics #school #physics
