@the.interpreter.m: FCT Senator, Ireti Kingibe has stirred reactions online after alleging that the Federal Government has a hidden tax plan that will force Nigerians to surrender 25% of their income. In a video message to supporters, the lawmaker claimed that a law to that effect has already been approved by the National Assembly but is being kept on hold because of the forthcoming general election. According to her, many citizens have no idea about the law, and those behind it are deliberately postponing its execution. The Senator warned that if President Bola Tinubu and the APC return in 2027, Nigerians should prepare to pay taxes beyond their capacity, at a time when families are already struggling with high electricity bills, rising prices and low income. She urged Nigerians to take charge of their future, saying no one will rescue the country for them, and reminded voters that they once voted out the PDP when things got tough, and can do the same to the APC. It is important to note that under the current tax framework — the Nigeria Tax Act 2025 which started on January 1, 2026 — there is no blanket 25% tax for everyone. The Act uses a progressive system where the first N800,000 is tax-free, and the 25% rate only applies to those earning above N50 million as taxable income. Could there be a new policy coming up?
