He was branded a ruthless killer by the FBI, but thousands of struggling Americans saw him as a hero. Charles “Pretty Boy” Floyd became one of America’s most notorious bank robbers during the Great Depression. As families lost their farms and homes to foreclosure, a legend spread that Floyd destroyed mortgage documents during his robberies, wiping out the debts of struggling farmers. How much of that story was true remains disputed, but it helped turn him into a folk hero. Then came the Kansas City Massacre of 1933, when four law enforcement officers were killed during an attempt to free a prisoner. Federal authorities linked Floyd to the attack, which he denied, and the manhunt intensified. On October 22, 1934, officers tracked Floyd to a farm near East Liverpool, Ohio. He fled into a field and was shot by law enforcement. His death ended one of the most notorious manhunts of the Depression era. But the most astonishing part came afterward: an estimated 20,000 to 40,000 people attended his funeral in Oklahoma. To some, he was a dangerous criminal. To others, he represented defiance against a system they believed had abandoned them. Was Pretty Boy Floyd a ruthless outlaw, or did the hardships of the Great Depression turn him into a folk hero? #ThisDayInHistory #TrueCrime #PrettyBoyFloyd #AmericanHistory #DarkHistory
