Barneveld, New York — On March 24, 2025, New York State Police troopers responded to a home on Sand Ridge Road in the Town of Trenton, Oneida County, after a #911 call at 11:13 p.m. reported that Matthew A. Brown, 30, of Barneveld, was having a psychotic attack, damaging items inside the residence, and required help. Troopers Daniel Rotach and Branden Gokey arrived at 11:31 p.m. Brown opened the door. During a short exchange he said “the bullet” and reached toward Trooper Rotach’s holstered handgun. At 11:33 p.m. the troopers took Brown to the floor, handcuffed him behind his back, and held him prone. They radioed for an ambulance and a Mental Hygiene Law evaluation. Oneida County Sheriff’s Deputy Thomas Bronson arrived at 11:40 p.m. and assisted. Brown remained face-down and handcuffed for about 21 minutes. At 11:54 p.m. he became unresponsive. Officers rolled him onto his side. Star Ambulance personnel entered at 11:56 p.m. and started CPR. Additional EMS units assisted. Brown was taken to Wynn Hospital in Utica and pronounced dead at 1:05 a.m. on March 25, 2025. Chief Medical Examiner Carolyn Revercomb listed the cause of death as bupropion toxicity, with prone restraint as a contributing factor, and classified the manner of death as homicide. Toxicology found a high concentration of bupropion, prescribed to Brown on March 14, 2025, for smoking cessation. He also had a documented mental-health diagnosis and received monthly paliperidone injections. The autopsy found no asphyxia or other officer-caused injury. #crime #mustwatch #police #contentcreator
