The ceremony for the 50th anniversary of the Olivier Awards, the most prestigious honor in British theater, opens with The Phantom of the Opera. The award was born in 1976. The musical premiered in the West End on 9 October 1986, with Michael Crawford as the Phantom and Sarah Brightman as Christine. In the year of its premiere, it won the Olivier for Best Musical. In 2026, the current West End cast opens the ceremony in tribute to the show's 40 years in London. And Andrew Lloyd Webber, who wrote the music, appears by surprise playing the organ. Inside the hall comes the title song. In the scene from Act 1, the Phantom appears in the mirror of Christine's dressing room. She passes through the mirror, and the two go down by boat on an underground lake to his lair. The descent happens to the music you are hearing. At the time, London's Phantom was Dean Chisnall and Christine was Beatrice Penny-Touré. At the Royal Albert Hall, the scene gained fog, candelabras and the boat. The musical that the Olivier honored in 1986 opened the Olivier of 2026. The man who wrote the music was there, at the organ. Christine passed through the mirror and got into the boat.
