Both things can be true, but the fact that someone is willing to coexist with that doesn’t mean we should not demand equity and equality.

People are not thinking of racism when they come to the US. It's not even considered. Most think that racism is a thing of the past. It's when they finally arrive and start experiencing it, when it hits them. It is so shocking to many, that they don't even know how to handle it.

Irish and Italians were once really heated and experienced discrimination up to WW2 and was much worse in late 1800s and early 1900s. Nowadays they are practically welcomed with open arms as white and similar religions (Roman Catholics were not all welcome ie JFK being the first openly Catholic was astounding).
