“Let Tom Cruise do whatever he wants” isn’t a worthwhile idea for a film

There's also the fact that a lot of those films are marketed terribly. Digger was literally marketed as 'you've never seen Tom Cruise like this' and then... nothing. Nobody knew what it was about. And then it released to mixed reviews. The time of marketing a film solely on the movie star is over. That doesn't work anymore. And then you have something like The Forgotten Island, which apparently is pretty good, but I barely even knew it existed. So how and why would I go see something I don't know exists?

acting like obsession, project hail Mary, the odyssey from this year didn't go nuts in the box office even tho they're original movies

I won’t blame people for not seeing Digger, but I will blame people if Wildwood bombs.

Blame the studios for wasting billions of dollars on only a handful of movies that end up taking zero risks and don't give any opportunities to new talent, when they could use that money to make hundreds of smaller movies with more creative freedom and just hope that a few of them take off.

Meanwhile obsession broke records so clearly people WANT to go to the cinema…

100%. When money is tight, the cinema is expensive, why take the risk of wasting a day on a potentially bad film?

yet horror films being made on smaller budgets are doing well. obsession being a prime example

THANK YOU. I was sick of hearing that sentiment repeated over and over, especially when Obsession killed it at the box office.

It has to be two things. We asked for original movies, and forgot to mention they also have to be good.

Box office sales are such a bad way of recognizing a films success now with streaming services involved in huge amounts of revenue. So many movies flop on release but are insanely popular on prime or Netflix

I liked digger but I agree that the budget was wayyyy too high. People just aren’t gonna take a gamble on any movie because tickets are expensive. The industry needs to keep this in mind while setting these budgets

When I saw the trailer for Digger, I thought it was a biopic of sorts by how the trailer seemed to assume I knew who Digger was. Thought it was one of the many “Surname” movies out there. When I realised I had no idea who Digger was, I decided I wasn’t the target audience for it. The trailer did an awful job of telling me what the film was.

I saw digger and I got it, but the opening 35 min is excruciating and if you don’t hook the audience in the first 30 minutes, man, you are obligating the audience to do a lot of work. Cruise doesn’t leave his bedroom for 15 min. The movie was DOA

blaming people in a cost of living crisis too when even going to the cinema now isn't cheap is crazy. its on the studio

Thays the thing. Years ago it would be a year plus until could rent the film then even longer until was on tv so would go to cinema more often. now see a film coming out in cinema want to see wait 3 months and itll be on streaming service you already paid for.

where would you have made budget cuts to make digger cheaper? why would we blame the artist for the budget? it’s a combination of issues between bad economy rn, streaming services and jacked up ticket prices. But if ticket prices and everything else has gotten more expensive, it would stand to reason that whatever is needed for movie making would as well.
