Most people know Brian May as Queen’s legendary guitarist, but the rock icon has another remarkable achievement that has nothing to do with music. He turned 157 acres of empty farmland into a thriving forest, planting 100,000 trees to give wildlife a place to call home. In 2012, May learned that a stretch of former farmland near Bere Regis in Dorset, England, was slated for housing development. Rather than watch the land disappear beneath concrete, he bought it with a very different vision - restoring it to nature. In September 2013, May joined local residents to plant the first tree, an oak. It was the beginning of an ambitious project to fill the fields with 100,000 native British trees and shrubs, all grown from locally collected seeds. More than a decade later, the landscape has been transformed. Affectionately known as “May’s Wood,” the restored habitat has welcomed back badgers, foxes, hedgehogs, deer, birds, and countless insects. The woodland is also home to a wildlife rescue co-founded by May, which cares for hundreds of injured British animals every year. Beyond his conservation work, the guitarist is a passionate animal advocate who has campaigned against the UK’s badger culling policy. And there’s another remarkable detail about May. The man behind some of rock’s most iconic guitar riffs also holds a PhD in astrophysics. He could have spent his fortune on almost anything. Instead, Brian May helped turn an empty field into a living forest, giving wildlife the space to thrive. A pretty incredible legacy for a rock legend. 🌳❤️
