MapQuest, the better alternative to Google Maps, now lets you see every known surveillance camera watching you. MapQuest was the first map site on the internet, the one people used to print out driving directions before Google Maps existed, and it still runs a free navigation app today. Its new Surveillance Layer puts an eyeball on every reported outdoor camera and license plate reader from Flock, Motorola, Axon, and a long list of other companies. Flock alone has more than 120,000 of these cameras across the country, and plate readers like them have been tied to a long list of abuses while building what seems like a surveillance state in the US. And Flock's CEO, Garrett Langley, has called camera-mapping projects like this "terroristic." AOL bought MapQuest for 1.1 billion dollars in 1999, Google Maps buried it, and in 2019 it was sold to an ad company for a price too small to report. When Google and Apple renamed Lake Ontario to Lake America, MapQuest posted "We're not changing it" and became the number one free app in the country within days, ahead of ChatGPT. People are ditching Waze over concerns about it being based in Israel and owned by Google, and they're ditching Google Maps over privacy concerns and the ads it now shows along your route, among many other issues. MapQuest isn't perfect, and it scores a C on Conscious Spend because it still shares location data with advertisers. If you want a map that collects nothing at all, try CoMaps, a free open-source map app. I find companies like these on the Conscious Spend app, where I can see who owns a company, how ethical it is, and better alternatives when a company scores low.
