@severnhikes: 🕯️ In 1856, a mother crossed the frozen Ohio River with her four children, running for freedom. When the slave catchers broke down the door, she had already decided: her children would not go back. What she did in those few minutes horrified the nation — and forced one impossible question into a Cincinnati courtroom. Was she a murderer, or was she property? She begged to be called a murderer. At least a murderer is a human being. ⛓️ This one is true, and it happened a few miles from where I’m standing. #darkhistory #ohio #truecrime #margaretgarner #BlackHistory
This is the history white men refuse to recognize because they still hold beliefs that African Americans are lesser. Our past is so ugly and filled with hate it hurts my heart. I fear some will take us back. Our current government is filled with men who long for a time when they could treat others with hate and disdain legally. 💔💔

This is what they don’t teach in school. What that time era did to human beings. This happened and this should be taught. Not hidden. This was our history, the dirty horrors of our history in this country

As a mother I can’t imagine what that did to her heart. It really makes you question “What would you do to protect your children?”

As a Black women I mourn for the women of my past lineage because no women should ever have to make the choice between freedom or death for her own children 😭😭😭

A lot of enslaved commented infanticide/ filicide. I’m sure they saw it as the most loving act or gift they could give their children. And that in of itself is tragic.

I wonder where Margaret was buried or if it’s even possible to find where her body could possibly be. She deserves care and love, even if her body is no longer

If history isn’t taught we are bound to repeat it!!! This is what they try so hard to bury and not teach but this is just as much American history as any!!

Toni Morrisons book Beloved is based on this. I read it for a college class and man it was hard to get through. I was so emotional. Ive still got it though. Its still on my shelf. It should be required reading.

Great storytelling. There's a historical marker in Covington Kentucky. It's all very sad.

I can't bring myself to say that she did 'the most terrible thing a mother could do' when you're talking about freeing her children from the horrors of slavery. There should be another way to describe it, likely known by people more eloquent than me.

The fact that I live in NKY, right across from Cincinnati and never heard this story is a shame. This story is so sad but is also such an important part of history. And the fact that a well known author went on to write a novel based on these events…. What a valuable teaching tool for our local education system.

This is our history. We stand on the shoulders of these people. We currently live in a country that's trying to whitewash history as if what our people experience wasn't that bad trying to whitewash, it?\n Don't forget her story, and don't settle for anything less. In this country , they paved the way for you
