My first therapist, Laura, was a white, middle-aged woman. She was PHENOMENAL. She helped me process some incredibly difficult experiences during college, and I will always be grateful for that. Eventually, she told me that I no longer needed treatment because I was functioning “just fine.” I trusted her, took her word for it, and went on with my life. A few years later, I decided to return to therapy. This time, my therapist was Hispanic. Within just a couple of sessions, she recognized how well I functioned, particularly under stress. But more importantly, she understood what was behind it. Her clinical knowledge, combined with her personal understanding of my culture and lived experiences, was incredibly validating and helpful. That experience changed the way I viewed therapy. I realized that, for me, having a Hispanic therapist is now non-negotiable. I no longer want to spend valuable therapy time explaining my cultural values, traditions, family dynamics, or why I switch between English and Spanish mid-sentence. I want to be understood without having to translate parts of who I am. This is one of the many reasons I believe representation in mental health matters so much. We need more Hispanic therapists. We need clinicians who understand the cultural nuances, the unspoken expectations, the generational experiences, and the things that don’t always translate into English. And to my fellow Hispanic therapists, I hope you recognize how valuable you are. Our presence in this field matters. Our lived experiences matter. We matter. YOU matter. #therapy #MentalHealth #saludmental
