One of the hardest things about being late diagnosed AuDHD is that people already have an idea of who you are. They’ve seen the sociable side. The jokes. The conversations. The energy. The spontaneity. So when you tell them you’re autistic too, they struggle to reconcile that with the person they think they know. But they’re seeing one part of the picture. They see me being social. They don’t see the recovery afterwards. They see me talking for hours. They don’t see me needing silence when I get home. They see the ADHD pushing me towards stimulation, while the autistic side of me is eventually overwhelmed by that same stimulation. That contradiction can make you spend years thinking you’re inconsistent or difficult to understand. You’re not. AuDHD isn’t two conditions cancelling each other out. It can be two different neurological drives pulling you in different directions at the same time. The person everyone thinks they know is only the version of you they get to see.
