Her feet were burned, the skin peeling away. But Mama Penja was still carrying her baby as she tried to survive the wildfires in Indonesia. When the rescue team found Mama Penja and baby Penja in West Kalimantan, both orangutans were extremely thin and weak. Mama Penja was badly dehydrated, with burns on both feet, and tests later showed she was suffering from severe anaemia. As she woke from the anaesthetic, she didn’t fight. She just looked for food. The team believes the wildfires had left her struggling to find enough to eat for weeks. Somehow, through the hunger, exhaustion and pain, she had kept going with her baby beside her. And she isn’t the only one. Our partners, YIARI, are responding to repeated orangutan rescues as wildfires continue to threaten wildlife across West Kalimantan. Mama Penja and Penja were two of three orangutans rescued that day alone, and BKSDA West Kalimantan says 18 orangutans have now been rescued because of the fires. Every rescue means another emergency response, another animal needing veterinary care, and more pressure on teams already working flat out to help every orangutan they can. The rescue was carried out by the Ministry of Forestry through BKSDA West Kalimantan, together with our partners, YIARI, with support from local organisations and communities. Please donate through the Instagram fundraiser or the link in our bio. Your support can help provide the veterinary care, rescue equipment and transport needed to reach orangutans caught up in Indonesia’s wildfires.
