An analysis of nearly 17,000 samples identified 510 resistant to all five antibiotics commonly used to treat the infection, leaving fewer treatment options for severe cases. Shigella spreads through tiny amounts of infected stool, including during sexual contact, through contaminated food or water, and from person to person.
