🎬 Part 25: 1926–1927 — When the Guns Fell Silent, but the Revolt Did Not End The revolt had begun with stunning victories... Al-Kafr... Al-Mazraa... French forces were defeated, the rebels advanced, and the spark spread from Jabal al-Druze to large parts of Syria. But France was not prepared to retreat. This time, it did not send a small force. It sent a large army, supported by aircraft, artillery, and troops from different parts of the French Empire. And the balance began to shift. Village after village... City after city... French forces gradually regained the territories that had fallen outside their control. In the Ghouta, rebel groups continued fighting, while Hassan al-Kharrat and his men fought fierce battles around Damascus. In Jabal al-Druze, Sultan Pasha al-Atrash refused to raise the white flag. But the war was beginning to exhaust everyone. Weapons were running low... Ammunition was running out... While the French forces continued to grow. Then came the hardest blow. French aircraft began bombing rebel areas. Suwayda and other towns were subjected to bombardment and destruction, while large numbers of civilians were displaced. By 1927, the armed resistance was no longer able to continue the war on the same scale. But Sultan al-Atrash did not surrender. He faced two choices: Captivity or exile. He chose exile. He left Syria with a number of revolutionary leaders and their families, heading toward Transjordan. Some of them later lived in Wadi al-Sirhan. And there... in the desert... far from the mountain that had witnessed their greatest battles... a new chapter began. The struggle was no longer fought with rifles. It became a struggle to keep the Syrian cause alive. From exile, Sultan al-Atrash continued communicating with Syrian and Lebanese nationalists and calling for Syrian independence and unity. In 1929, the Desert Conference was held in Wadi al-Sirhan, with the participation of several nationalist figures, in an effort to continue political resistance against the Mandate. And here lies the paradox... The revolt had been defeated .
