@dakotanator_: Aye, aye, Käpten! The Kriegsmarine WW2 Edit . Kriegsmarine was the navy of Germany from 1935 to 1945, serving as one of the three branches of the Wehrmacht under Mr H. Origins and Restrictions • Treaty of Versailles: After World War I, Germany was heavily restricted, capped at a tiny surface force and banned from possessing submarines. • Rearmament: In 1935, the Anglo-German Naval Agreement allowed Germany to rebuild its fleet up to 35% of the size of the British Royal Navy. • Plan Z: Initiated in January 1939, this ambitious program aimed to build a massive surface fleet to challenge Britain, though it was canceled when World War II broke out later that year. Key Operations and Strategy • Battle of the Atlantic: The primary focus of the Kriegsmarine was disrupting Allied shipping and supply lines. • U-Boat Warfare: Outnumbered on the surface, Germany relied heavily on submarines operating in "wolf packs". Grand Admiral Karl Dönitz later shifted the entire naval priority fully to U-boats as surface losses mounted. • Notable Surface Ships: Famous capital ships included the battleships Bismarck and Tirpitz, the pocket battleship Admiral Graf Spee, and heavy cruisers like the Admiral Hipper. • Major Campaigns: The navy participated in the Spanish Civil War, the invasion of Norway, Arctic convoys, and late-war Baltic evacuations. Downfall and Losses • Heavy Attrition: The Kriegsmarine lost 47 major surface vessels (including 7 capital ships and 27 destroyers) and roughly 780 U-boats by the end of the war. • Post-War: Following Germany's defeat in 1945, the organization was dismantled, and surviving vessels were divided among the Allied powers. #ww2 #ww2history #navy #1940s #war #educationalpurposes
