Also people talk about blacks in France as an anomaly which is very weird because they’ve always been there. One of Napoleon’s generals was black. Some of the most famous French literature (the count of montecristo, and the three musketeers) were written by a black french man. We have famous classical black french artists also. Surely they were not the norm, but they werent exactly outside the landscape either. When it comes to “french arabs” as well, one has to understand that for about 125 years Algeria was an integral part of France, not just a colony, it was literal French territory. Albert Camus, french literature nobel laureate, was born in Algeria. Jean Luc Melenchon was born in Morocco. This is why even in French politics, some of the most far right figures that are anti-immigrant all have north african names and ancestry: Eric Zemmour, Sarah Knafo, Cyril Hanouna and Jean Messiah are respectively Algerian, Tunisian, Moroccan and Egyptian… and they’re all super far right public figures that have hard anti-immigration stances lol. So from a French perspective, there isnt really a debate around immigration regarding recent protests.
