@mindful.breaths: ✨ ĀBHASSARA — THE RADIANT GODS Imagine a world where beings shine with their own radiance, where celestial light fills the heavens, and where existence continues even as an entire world-system passes through cosmic change. In traditional Buddhist cosmology, these beings belong to the Ābhassara realms — often translated as the “Radiant” or “Streaming Radiance” Brahmā realms. 🌌 But their story becomes even more fascinating when we look at the Buddhist account of how worlds change. 🌟 THE REALM OF RADIANCE In the traditional Theravāda classification, the Ābhassara realms belong to the Form Realm (Rūpa-dhātu). These are refined forms of existence associated with meditative development, far removed from the ordinary pleasures and distractions of the human world. Yet even these extraordinary beings are not Buddhas, creators, or immortal souls. They remain within saṃsāra — the cycle of birth and death. 🌌 WHEN A WORLD-SYSTEM CONTRACTS The Aggañña Sutta (DN 27) presents a remarkable traditional cosmological account. After a world-system has undergone a period of contraction, beings associated with the Ābhassara realm appear in the story of a world beginning to develop again. They are described as radiant beings, moving through the air, luminous and mind-made, living on delight. As the developing world changes, the story describes their gradual transition toward more material forms of existence. This is an ancient Buddhist cosmological narrative, not a scientific account of the Big Bang or the evolution of life. 🔥 THE MOST IMPORTANT DETAIL Even a realm filled with radiance is impermanent. A heavenly existence may last an unimaginable length of time, but great longevity is not eternity. The Ābhassara realms are extraordinary within Buddhist cosmology, yet they do not represent final liberation. 🪷 THE DEEPER TEACHING We are often captivated by the idea of becoming more powerful, more radiant, or existing in a higher world. But Buddhist wisdom asks a deeper question: Can any conditioned existence provide permanent freedom? The answer is not found in the brilliance of a celestial realm. It is found by understanding impermanence, overcoming ignorance, and bringing craving to an end. 🌌 Even the radiant gods remain within the great cycle of change. The goal is not merely to shine above the world.
