I've noticed something about the way people consume marriage advice online, and I think it's causing more problems in relationships than we realise. You hear someone talking about what a good husband should do, and immediately you start thinking about all the ways your husband falls short. Or you hear something about the responsibilities of a wife, and suddenly you're thinking about everything your wife isn't doing. And before you know it, you've turned something that could've helped your marriage into another reason to be disappointed with the person you married. I think we need to be really careful with this. Because there's so much marriage content online today. Some of it is genuinely beneficial. Some of it is terrible. And even the good advice can become harmful when you're constantly using it to judge your spouse. Because the reality is that it’s much easier to recognise the things your spouse needs to improve than to sit with the uncomfortable reality that you might have things to work on yourself. But how often do we hear those same reminders and ask ourselves whether we're actually living up to them? The next time you hear marriage advice, before thinking about who needs to hear it, ask yourself how you can benefit from it. You might find that the advice you were hoping would change your spouse was actually something you needed yourself. May Allah help us recognise our own shortcomings, fulfil our responsibilities and bring more love, mercy and understanding into our marriages. Ameen.
