@frontpaigehistory: In 1838, Edgar Allan Poe invented a fictitious character named Richard Parker. In 1884, a real Richard Parker met the exact same fate. 😳 Poe’s only novel, The Narrative of Arthur Gordon Pym of Nantucket, tells the story of shipwreck survivors starving at sea. In the story, a cabin boy named Richard Parker is sacrificed so the others can survive. Forty-six years later, a yacht called the Mignonette sank on its way to Australia. Four men drifted in a tiny lifeboat for weeks with almost no food or water. The youngest was a 17-year-old cabin boy who grew too weak to go on, and he was sacrificed so the others could survive. His name was Richard Parker. The survivors were put on trial back in England, and the case became a landmark in British law. Most people at the time had no idea Poe had written nearly the same story decades earlier. And here’s the bonus: Yann Martel named the tiger in Life of Pi “Richard Parker” as a nod to this story.
