@bikers_see_you: Downhill riding can look easy because gravity is doing part of the work. That’s also what makes it dangerous. Once the road starts dropping, speed builds easier, traffic gaps shrink faster, brakes work harder, and corners can arrive with more energy than you expected. Here are 5 downhill riding mistakes riders need to watch for: 1️⃣ Riding the brakes all the way down Constant brake pressure can build heat and reduce braking performance. Use an appropriate lower gear and engine braking to help control speed, then use the brakes deliberately when needed. 2️⃣ Entering the corner too fast Trying to remove a bunch of speed after you’re already leaned over reduces your margin. Get your entry speed under control before turn-in and give yourself a smoother path through the curve. 3️⃣ Letting gravity set your speed A motorcycle can quietly keep accelerating downhill even when you don’t feel like you’re adding throttle. Stay ahead of it instead of realizing halfway into the corner that you’re carrying more speed than you intended. 4️⃣ Following too closely Downhill traffic can compress quickly when vehicles brake for curves, intersections, slower traffic, or hazards. More following distance gives you better sightlines, more reaction time, and smoother braking options. 5️⃣ Ignoring what collects at the bottom Gravel, sand, water, leaves, and debris tend to migrate downhill and collect in turns, gutters, low spots, and intersections. Expect the bottom of the grade to potentially have less traction than the road above it. **DOWNHILL DOESN’T MEAN FREE SPEED. IT MEANS YOU HAVE TO MANAGE ENERGY.** Set your speed early. Use engine braking. Brake before the corner. Leave yourself space. Scan where debris is likely to collect. Gravity is always working. Your job is to stay ahead of it. 👇 What’s the biggest downhill mistake you see riders make—too much speed, riding the brakes, or following too close? 🏍️ Ride Smart.
