@raisinglittletalkers: Don’t do this when your toddler says a new word 😬
At 00:35 - what I actually recommend to support your toddler’s language development in that moment, as a speech therapist and mom of 3
What helps more when your toddler says a new word:
✨ A back-and-forth interaction
✨ More chances to say the word again or build on it
✨ Real connection, not performance
If your child lights up when you cheer, go for it. You know your child best. But if you’ve been wondering why your toddler doesn’t repeat words often, try this instead.
💬 How do you usually react when your toddler says a new word? Tell me below!

Some of you are getting so worked up about this 😂 It’s not a matter of whether your child likes praise…most kids love clapping and praise. This is an effective tip from a language perspective for parents who are interested in deepening communication development. Not for everyone. keep scrolling if it doesn’t resonate with you 🧡

Thanks - as a proud Grandparent I'm very prone to spontaneous clapping at every new little triumph. I will reign that in a bit now.

not saying your wrong but our daughter thrives on praise, clapping and high fives has helped massively in her learning and engagement. so our experience of learning and teaching does contradict what your saying in this video but I guess everyone's experience is different.

I do this as a new slp assistant. 🫠 What are some other ways to reinforce? Or do we not need to acknowledge every single target achieved?

Damn all the new rules for raising babies are wild. Raised a child in the 90s now doing all over again 30 years later and everyone is a damn pro.

You know, I just never met an adult who struggles with speech due to the fact that they were clapped at whilst learning words as an infant.
