I’ve been gardening for almost 20 years, and somehow I had never done this before…. 🌸🎃 In a suburban garden, every bit of space has to earn its keep, and I’ve learned that the best garden spaces usually do more than one job. So this underutilized side yard became both a pumpkin patch and a cut flower garden. The flowers are for bouquets and pollinators. The pumpkins are for fall decor and food. And together, they turned a neglected strip beside the house into one of the most productive spaces in my garden. I created simple berms, which are basically long, raised mounds of soil, and planted directly into them. No raised beds required. At the back, I planted taller cut flowers: 🌸 strawflowers 🌸 dahlias 🌸 cosmos 🌸 rudbeckia There are a couple of small metal beds here that were already in place and hold perennial flowers, but the pumpkins and most of the cut flowers went straight into the bermed soil. This year’s edible pumpkins + winter squash: 🎃 Rouge Vif d’Étampes - French heirloom 🎃 Jarrahdale - heirloom 🎃 Spellcast - F1 hybrid 🎃 Kabocha 🎃 Butternut A few more beautiful edible varieties worth trying: ✨ Small Sugar - heirloom ✨ Jack Be Little - small, edible and perfect for individual servings ✨ Black Futsu - Japanese heirloom ✨ Musquée de Provence - French heirloom ✨ Galeux d’Eysines - French heirloom ✨ Marina di Chioggia - Italian heirloom One thing to know: pumpkins are not tidy. They ramble, overlap and eventually create a thick tangle of vines, flowers and fruit, so this works especially well in a space where you can let them do their thing. This project goes to show you that you don’t necessarily need another garden bed. Sometimes you just need to look at the space you already have differently. 🌸Erin
