With an overall length of 75.36 meters (247 ft 3 in), a wingspan of 63.45 meters, and a maximum takeoff weight of up to 380,000 kg, the A340-600 was engineered for high-capacity intercontinental operations. Its range of approximately 7,800 nautical miles (14,450 km), depending on configuration and payload, allowed Lufthansa to operate nonstop services on demanding long-haul routes. A distinctive feature of the A340-600 is its three-axle center landing gear, designed to distribute the aircraft’s substantial weight during ground operations. Its four-engine configuration also enabled long-range operations without the ETOPS constraints applicable to twin-engine aircraft. Introduced into Lufthansa’s fleet in 2003, the A340-600 served for more than two decades as a key component of the airline’s intercontinental network. Its retirement reflects the industry’s transition toward more fuel-efficient twin-engine widebodies, including the Airbus A350 and Boeing 787.
