A clinical trial just tested a way to stop a child's cavity in 10 seconds — no drill, no anesthetic, no needle.   The treatment is silver diamine fluoride (SDF), a liquid painted directly onto a cavity that kills the decay-causing bacteria while strengthening what's left of the tooth. SDF isn't new, but it has never been FDA-approved for use on children in the U.S. — a trial published in JAMA Pediatrics may be about to change that.   Researchers across three U.S. sites tested SDF against a placebo in 830 children under age 6, all with severe cavities. Six months after a single application, SDF had stopped tooth decay in 54% of treated cavities, compared to just 22.5% in the placebo group — more than double the effect, from one 10-second application. There was no difference in tooth pain between groups, and side effects were mostly mild, such as sore throats that may not even have been directly related to the treatment.   The tradeoff is cosmetic, not medical: SDF leaves a permanent dark stain on the treated tooth. Researchers argue that's a reasonable price for a treatment this fast and this safe, with lead researcher Margherita Fontana noting the results held up even in children as young as one year old.   The bigger opportunity may be access, not convenience. Public health data shows more than 1 in 10 U.S. children aged 2 to 5 already have at least one cavity, rising to nearly 1 in 5 by ages 6 to 8, and severe cases can require general anesthesia and long waits for hospital-based dental care. Because SDF is quick and noninvasive, researchers suggest it could eventually be applied in primary-care settings, not just dental offices — meaningful for underserved communities where children often see a pediatrician years before ever seeing a dentist.   The trial was limited to baby teeth, so it can't yet say whether SDF should replace fillings or drilling for permanent adult teeth. But for a) young children and b) a healthcare system full of long referral waits, it's a rare case of a genuinely fast, painless fix showing real clinical evidence behind it.   source: Silver Diamine Fluoride for Arresting Early Childhood Caries.
