@thotij: Cultural assumptions influence what we consider psychologically healthy. Drawing on Decolonizing Therapy and multicultural psychology, we'll examine how the same behavior can have very different meanings depending on its cultural context. #psychology #culture

My mom's biggest message to us was, "You can't rely on anyone else, you can only ever rely on yourself." She had been burned by some of her past partners. But she never learned to have a community outside of her main relationship. I learned to build a community around me and to take care of that community. She was so wrong. I rely on so many people for my wonderful life.

Every culture creates norms and elevates certain manners, especially around gender responsibilities. I grew up with the Carholuc Christian service model with all its weird sexual discomfort, and had to interview all my thoughts and choose consciously what thoughts to keep in order to overcome all the brainwashing that made me feel unnatural and unworthy of love. Different cultural ways do make life interesting but when they dont allow any coloring outside the lines, someone other than Creation is playing God. I would love it if people could move between cultures without being killed or being an outcast. And I believe when a person's individuality is acknowledged,a natural outcome will be to give back to the community that embraced it.

spot on. per the question at the end - i grew up on Maui, where intergenerational living is normal and valued. however, capitalism is also here and so, many people struggle internally with being perceived as "successful" under these opposing metrics; indigenous/communal vs. colonial/individualist, it can create a split. to speak to what 'norms' we grew up with that i realize now are not healthy - the ENTIRE Hospitality Industry Industrial Complex (which is the New Plantation). We were raised to be deeply subservient to american power/authority, and we were told this is because we are kind and gracious. So anything outside of subservience and graciousness to the foreign "visitor" is still considered divergent and hostile, which stunts our growth, personally imo.

I’ve thought about this a lot as someone in school studying psychology right now. So much of what we are taught (conflict resolution, emotional regulation, life markers, etc) are all through a westernized lens. Being Hispanic, so much doesn’t apply or feel true to me so it makes me question how much of what I’m learning can truly help others if through such a narrow framing

My mom was Sicilian. She was fine having children leave the house. As long as their houses were down the block near their Aunt’s, by their cousin’s, around the corner from their sister’s just up the street from Nona’s 😎😀 Ever been in a Sicilian neighborhood????

I’ve tried to find a balance, both personally and professionally as a therapist. In my 20’s when I sought more agency around my Italian immigrant family, you’d have thought I was asking for a kidney. 😂 We had to come to an understanding that me growing up was a good thing, and find compromise. Culture plays a huge roll in how we honor self and others!

I grew up thinking everyone was taught about their bodies, their breath, how to cough out the gunk we breathe in and how dance and singing are linked to our health, but no, those things are being lost and other cultures have no idea how their bodies operate, they even laugh and shame one another for their snorting and hacking, not knowing that all the noises we make minding the phlegm that builds up are words infants understand, because the first thing they need to do is get their lungs and gullet working right

YES! the foundation of almost everything in western culture is built on the opinions of dead, wealthy, white men. It's a VERY narrow lens.
