@pmkimemia: “SCRAP RELIGIOUS EDUCATION?” Kenyans Stunned as Murang’a Students Recite the Constitution Kenyans have been left amazed after students from Zilomon Group of Schools in Murang’a reportedly demonstrated an impressive ability to recite the Constitution of Kenya. The students’ performance has sparked debate online, with some Kenyans arguing that the Constitution deserves to be taught as a subject on its own in schools. Some have even suggested scrapping Religious Education to create room for a dedicated subject on the Constitution, arguing that young people should understand their rights, freedoms, duties and the laws that govern the country. The argument is that a country cannot fully empower its citizens if they grow up without a proper understanding of the Constitution. Supporters of the idea believe that teaching constitutional knowledge from an early age could help raise a generation that understands democracy, demands accountability from leaders and knows when their rights are being violated. However, others may argue that Religious Education also plays a role in teaching moral values and should not necessarily be sacrificed to achieve constitutional literacy. The students’ reported performance has therefore raised a bigger question, Should Kenya introduce the Constitution as a standalone subject in schools, and should it take priority over Religious Education?
