We had Noah’s follow-up appointment this morning to go over the results of his echocardiogram from a few days ago. Unfortunately, the news wasn’t good on that front, either. The conduit connected to his replaced heart valve is leaking pretty significantly. As a result, his blood pressure is also increasing, despite taking daily medication to help keep it under control. The reality is that he’s going to need another surgery, and there’s really no way around it. Depending on the severity, they may be able to attempt a less invasive procedure using a balloon and stent. This approach failed the last time they tried it, but we’re holding on to hope that things might go differently this time. If that isn’t successful, though, another open-heart surgery will be necessary. And unfortunately, attempting the balloon procedure comes with its own risks. If the conduit tears during inflation, the need for open-heart surgery becomes much more urgent. So even the less invasive option isn’t without some pretty terrifying possibilities. Obviously this isn’t what we wanted to hear. But that’s life, right? For now - we’ll be keeping a close eye on him, watching for any physical changes, and doing what we can to keep his blood pressure under control. If things remain stable, he’ll go back in six months to reassess and determine whether it’s time to intervene or if we can safely put it off a little longer. He was so young during his first two heart surgeries that he couldn’t fully comprehend what was happening or what it all meant. But he’s 10 now. He understands what surgery is. He understands that it’s his heart. And he understands enough to know that this isn’t something small. That makes this all feel even worse. We’re doing our best to stay positive and take things one day at a time! Please remember to keep Moose’s little best friend in your thoughts and prayers. ❤️
