I got fired from a pet store because I refused to sell an animal to a customer after having overheard them on the phone discussing using the animal as bait. My manager literally told me my concern should be about making a sale, not what happens to the animal after it's left the store.

a big ass tank is not actually that expensive or a big ass plastic tub. its waaay cheaper than the torture cages pet stores sell

Warm take: people only consider hamsters “children’s pets” because they associate an animal being small with being insignificant

my 3 year old is obsessed with hamsters but no way I would get one for him. it would end up cat food honestly.

Hey! I have a question. I feed my cats this brand and some people were telling me it's bad. Is it?

The most annoying question when I worked at petshhhmooort was “does (insert any animal) bite”… my response was always “does it have a mouth?”

If your kid can’t handle the pet.. don’t get it. Even on very hard days I get up and take care of him

Small animals are often more high maintenance than cats and dogs, it’s so heartbreaking how people think their desires are more important than their well-being 😭

hamsters are suitable for teenagers but absolutely not for children. my bf and i both had them as teenagers and they exceeded life expectancy

Corps like Petco, Pet supply, etc should have a policy in place that allows the employees to refuse to sell animals if they believe the person attempting to purchase it isn’t a good fit. I could not imagine not teaching my child how to properly treat an animal, let alone getting a young child a pet if they don’t know how to handle it with care and understand that mistreating the living being can hurt or unalive it.

As someone who had hamsters as a kid, hamsters should not be a pet for kids, they are a lot of work and you need to be really careful handling them, both of which kids don’t really know how to or do if they know

my betta was in a 5g tank and i moved her to a 10g tank....that 10g tank turned into an amazing 55g tank lmaoo (it was originally $199.99 but was on sale for $99.99 so it was a spare of the moment purchase!)

As much as we hate Pets at Home, I will praise the women at the cash register when I was buying hamster supplies. We got talking, I showed her my set up and she ended up calling over her colleague to show her and got so happy that someone wasn't stuffing a hamster in a tiny cage. I do miss my little goofball, I lost him to old age

I really wish the government would put laws in place to prevent companies and stores from selling enclosures/products that actively harm an animal. The government has laws and rules for baby car seats and cribs but when it comes to small pets nobody cares.

a fish tank with a bag of wood shavings is still going to be better than a plastic death trap 🫠 obviously neither are correct but sheesh.

i never understood the concept of starter pets. if anything, something like a hamster or a fish or a reptile actually require super advanced care compared to that of a cat or a dog. so many times i see people dont get the right sized enclosures, filters and cycling for fish tanks, ive even seen people neglect heating lamps for their reptiles :((( cats and dogs can just live in your house so long as you provide the necessary enrichment for them.
