Khon Performance of Kingdom of Thailand Khon is a high art form of Thai dramatic performance that dates back to the Ayutthaya period. It originated from the fusion of three ancient arts: Chak Nak Duekdamphan (from which it adopted costumes and masks), Krabi-Krabong or traditional martial arts (from which it drew powerful combat movements), and Nang Yai or grand shadow puppetry (from which it derived its dance postures, as well as its chanting and dialogue styles). A defining characteristic of Khon is that almost all performers must wear a 'Khon mask' to cover their faces and use stylized dance to communicate, while an external troupe of narrators and a Piphat orchestra provide the voice-overs, dialogue, and musical accompaniment throughout the performance. Almost all stories performed in Khon are from the epic 'Ramakien,' which depicts the war between Phra Ram (Rama) and Thotsakan (Ravana), symbolizing the concept of good triumphing over evil. In the past, Khon was considered a royal entertainment restricted solely to the royal court. It was not until the Rattanakosin period, particularly during the reign of King Vajiravudh (King Rama VI), that Khon was promoted to become more widespread among the general public through the establishment of the Department of Entertainment and the emergence of private Khon troupes. In the modern era, Khon has been revitalized to perform gracefully and dynamically under the 'Royal Khon Performances' initiated by Her Majesty Queen Sirikit The Queen Mother. This initiative has enhanced the stage scenery, lighting, sound, and costumes to be even more magnificent and spectacular. As a result, Khon remains an Intangible Cultural Heritage of Humanity, recognized by UNESCO in 2018, and continues to be a source of great pride for the Thai people up to the present day🇹🇭😊 #thailand #fyp #thai #thaiculture #virul
