A prosecutor in Cincinnati, Ohio, told a jury today that a man should be convicted of murder for driving his car into a sheriff's deputy and killing him because he was upset another law enforcement officer shot and killed his son the previous day. "Just over 24 hours before Deputy Henderson was killed, the defendant lost his son to the hand — at the hands of a police officer. Whether that shooting was justified or not is not why we're here. It is not what you are here to do, but it's evidence, and you can consider it in deciding the defendant's state of mind. He saw the uniform, and he reacted," said Katie Burroughs, an assistant prosecutor in Hamilton County, in her closing argument in the trial of Rodney Hinton Jr. "The video shows Deputy Henderson is the first and only officer who comes in to Rodney's sightline. Unobstructed, unaware, defenseless and within reach," Burroughs continued. "The defendant was described as agitated and distraught. An officer took the life of his son, and he decided to take the life of one of their brothers. That's logical, and motive is one of the circumstances that you can consider when deciding on purpose." Hinton, 40, is accused of intentionally hitting and killing Deputy Larry Henderson of the Hamilton County Sheriff's Office with his car on May 2, 2025, after his 18-year-old son was fatally shot by a Cincinnati police officer during a stolen car investigation. Hinton for the first time saw body-camera footage of his son's shooting hours before prosecutors say he targeted Henderson as Henderson directed traffic for the University of Cincinnati. Hinton is charged in the Hamilton County Court of Common Pleas with two counts of aggravated murder, two counts of felonious assault and a single count of murder. He has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity. Judge Jody M. Luebbers ruled last week that jurors can consider reckless homicide as a lesser-included offense. #law #legal #crime
