@americashiddentreasures: Most barrier islands along Florida's Gulf Coast run roughly north to south, but Sanibel Island curves the other way, stretching east to west. That unusual shape puts it directly in the path of Gulf currents, which sweep shells across the sea floor and pile them up on Sanibel's beaches in numbers most islands never see. The result is a shoreline where serious shellers walk hunched over in what locals call the Sanibel Stoop, scanning the sand for whelks, conchs, and the occasional rare junonia. The island has earned the nickname Seashell Capital of the World from travel writers for exactly this reason, and it draws collectors from well beyond Florida every season. Much of the island's wild side is protected inside the J.N. Ding Darling National Wildlife Refuge, established in 1945 and later named for the conservationist and cartoonist who helped save it from development. Would you rather hunt for rare shells at dawn or watch the refuge's birds at sunset? #SanibelIsland #SecretIslands #Florida #DingDarling #GulfCoast
