That’s not what she said though. She didn’t say she couldn’t accommodate them, she said she couldn’t assign less work to them than she does for other students.

I agree there is an equity issue here but the solution isn’t to make the class easier. All students need to learn the same material. I do think schools need to accommodate students better. There should be more funding options that don’t require you to take 12 credit hours. They also need to allow for students to fail and that not mean the student is out the money they paid for the class ( maybe give x amount of “retakes”).

she didn't say that though. she said she cant change the course or assign different or less work just because they're busy. and thats true. everyone needs to get the exact same education.

I’m confused on why it was said in the first place. Are people expecting professors to alter their class schedule and assignments to accommodate those who work?

The classism is crazy. My partner was chastised and not so subtly threatened to be kicked out for having a job during this PhD program. His stipend? 26K.

Your grad school didn’t offer health insurance? What if you were over 26?

....I may or may not be throwing hands if anyone told me to just ask my parents for money. shortly after the 2008 recession.

I agree with much of what you are saying here as I have seen many professors with no flexibility to understand that people have different responsibilities outside of class. My issue is that some of what you suggest is field specific. For example, if I am teaching a reading intensive course like literature or women's and gender studies where we need to explore readings, watchings, and listening I need students to do some of that outside of class. I try to be as ethical as possible and limit materials to around 20 pages per class, but still get lots of pushback about reading a newspaper article or watching a Ted talk let alone reading a novel. Some fields have more of that hands on element that can happen in a class session compared to others.

Working class means we have to sell our labor to survive, as opposed to those in the capitalist class who make money from rents. At least that’s one way of carving up the space. As to whether that — or any alternative carving — is helpful or insightful 🤷‍♂️

I'm a 36 year old back in college, but I think a lot of my professors have been really good about understanding we have outside lives/jobs/etc. I think it's because I'm in community college though - I feel like CC has a wider array of people, circumstances, etc, so I feel like the professors are typically more conscious of it. But I've had professors that straight up told us "if you can't take time off work and tell your family you need to FOCUS on this then maybe you should take time off school until you can" and like. I feel like that's too far? I don't mind homework but I feel like there needs to be a middle ground. I'm in our school's honors program, I've been on the dean's list - I obviously don't mind work - but sometimes the professors also need to understand that sometimes we're also grown adults with jobs and mortgages and kids, too.

i got told 'im not advising you as a poor person I'm advising you as a college student' after I'd asked my advisor for alternatives to the recommended tech (all apple products) turns out all the necessary programs did in fact work on my shitty little laptop even tho she insisted they wouldn't

The biggest problem I’ve faced with this is professors expecting students to be able to attend events as part of making an assignment but not allowing enough time in advance to rearrange schedules. There were so many times that I had to give up hours I needed to be able to pay rent so I could cover an event for journalism class.

Ive found that making attendance extremely low stakes INCREASES class discussion and quality. When it’s a choice to show up, I find they’re way more engaged *and* they’re more open with me about how I can support them!! I’m obsessed with making (some) classes basically attendance-optional. The students that show up almost ALWAYS do better than those who don’t 🤷‍♀️

I made a comment about how one of my professors assigns assignments in class at 10a.m. and makes them due at 5p.m THE SAME DAY. I was saying how easy it would be to give us an full day to do assignments as I have class until 4 and then work at 5. Everyone, mostly professors, were telling me that if I can't commit to school then I should be in college and completely neglecting how they are proving the classist point.

Tertiary education as a whole was designed for rich people. It isn't even designed for part time work, especially not full time. Professors can't change this obviously, but the institutions will not change unless we acknowledge it. There are a lot of ways to accommodate full time working students, but the institution is designed to weed those people out. And we need to change that. Have more flexible timing, ditch the monday-friday 9-5 schedule for something more open, have more support for students who are falling behind. The entire institution globally needs to change, and for that our mindset needs to change.

I don't come from a background where my parents could pay for my life in school. but i don't understand why people who work full time think they can do school full time. school is basically a job in terms of time. part time school is a thing and what I do. you couldn't work two full time jobs. I don't understand why taking less classes is not the first option for people who work full time. you can finish in 5 years or whatever you need. automatic disadvantage, not ok. but sometimes we need to accommodate ourself by taking on less work somewhere. and whatever accomodations a prof could put in place can't make up for the fact that you'd be working 80+ hours a week with full-time job and school work.

A very simple accomodation is giving at least a week to do any homework. I wasn't even working full time in college and still I had my schedule filled up enough that I couldn't do homework any day and I was doing all my school work on Thursdays and Sundays. Whenever a prof would assign something on Monday due on Wednesday I simply had zero free time to do it unless I skipped sleep, work, or another class.

It bothers me that her response to comments saying that her claim was classist was to prove that she’s not rich, as though that makes her incapable of making classist statements

I remember during COVID, we switched to online lectures halfway through the semester AND they changed the dates and times of the lectures. I worked in a restaurant that got classified as “essential” after a brief shutdown and the new lecture times interfered with my job. And I couldn’t take unemployment because as a server, my unemployment checks would be based on my hourly wage of $5/hour. The school in general and the professors wouldn’t work with me and it was so frustrating. I was a nontrad student with rent and bills and no parental help. It sucked.

Just like any other kind of diversity it also makes the whole classroom better. Like it’s great when you take a college class with a non traditional student who is already working in that industry, they bring so much perspective to the discussion because they have real world experience

I’m a grad student and I have 2-3 jobs outside of my student work, both on and off campus. My on campus job I call my “homework job” because I sit at a reception desk and really only answer the phone which rarely rings. My retail job is completely different, I feel like I “waste” 30+hrs a week because I literally cannot utilize that time to work on anything related to my studies or career. My professors sometimes ask me how much time I spend on their classes or my thesis a week, and they are often disappointed by the meager amount of time I am able to spend on my studies. It’s brutal.

I went back to college at 30. I was talking to a prof at office hours cause I was struggling with the class, and I told him that I work full time during the week, so most of the hw that I do is on the weekends and can't dedicate as much time as I wanted to the class. I don't bring it up to gain sympathy or anything, mainly just to explain my situation. My prof legitimately told me, "Well...can you work less?" Like no sir. I have bills to pay. I'm not a fresh out of hs 18 yr old that can still live with their parents.

Comment section full of people who didn’t watch the whole video lol. Anyway, I think there’s a gap in how college works overall and “the real world.” There’s not one perfect solution, I think it would take a lot of little tweaks in several areas to fix things.

100%. Your comment on attendance did confuse me. I see the best advantage of attendance as a mental health check-in. If they miss three in a row- I check on them. An example of how this helped: It taught me I had a student whose father died and the school didn't know. Because of attendance, we were able to support her. I also like to incentivize and reward class participation. Would love to hear your take on How do you navigate these benefits while not penalizing students
