In France, you protested at the height of your happiness, over nothing but laughter and jokes. You looted and vandalized cities and shops, showing no mercy to anything. But here in Iran, we took to the streets to protest for basic necessities and rights: access to food and medicine, freedom of speech, an end to theft, embezzlement, and government corruption, equal rights for women and men, an end to rape and murder, and an end to executions without trials. We protested for the right to have freedom of expression, access to housing and clothing, better education, justice, and an end to the plundering and destruction of our country's resources. And the response we received from our government was nothing like yours. The government shot people with live ammunition and killed them. People were imprisoned and executed. They were raped and murdered. Those who survived were taken away, and their organs were removed. The few who returned alive no longer speak or leave their homes. They have become like walking corpses. Many people were not even given the bodies of their loved ones to bury. We protested again, this time calling for a revolution. We raised our voices and took to the streets peacefully, without any weapons or means of defending ourselves. We were so harmless that even children as young as two and as old as ten were among the protesters. Yet the government massacred us even more brutally than before. It killed us, tortured us, imprisoned us, and threatened us. People were shot in the streets or beaten so severely that they died from blood loss.
Nearly 50,000 people were killed in just two nights. And that is only the death toll from two nights of protests. Do the math yourself: how many more people were killed or executed during the other nights of that month? This is the reality of Iran. This is what the Islamic Republic has been doing to Iran and its people. And this was not the first time. Over the 47 years of the Islamic Republic's rule, we have lost thousands upon thousands of people. Yet the world remains silent about this mass slaughter, choosing to turn a blind eye for the sake of its own interests.
