There’s something so important about realizing that the person you choose to build a future with needs to be somebody who’s willing to take responsibility for their own life. Because imagine being in a relationship with someone you genuinely love, supporting them through difficult circumstances, encouraging them when they’re struggling, and believing that they’re doing everything they can to improve their situation. Then they finally get an opportunity they’ve been waiting for, something that could help them become financially stable and move forward, and they simply don’t show up. No emergency. No unavoidable circumstance. They just decided not to go. 😭 And suddenly you’re sitting there wondering, If you won’t even show up for your own future, how am I supposed to trust you to show up for ours? Because the issue isn’t necessarily that somebody is unemployed. People lose jobs. Industries change. Life gets difficult. Sometimes hardworking, responsible people go through periods where they’re struggling financially, and there’s absolutely nothing shameful about that. A person’s worth isn’t determined by their paycheck. But there’s a massive difference between somebody who’s experiencing a difficult season and somebody who’s completely unwilling to make an effort to change their circumstances. One person might be applying to jobs every day, developing new skills, attending interviews, and doing everything possible to get back on their feet. The other might constantly complain about their situation while avoiding every opportunity to improve it. And when you’re thinking about marriage, children, shared responsibilities, and building a life together, that difference matters. Because love isn’t just about enjoying somebody’s company when everything is easy. It’s about trusting their character when life becomes demanding. Can they follow through on commitments? Can they take initiative without somebody constantly reminding them? Can they handle responsibility when nobody is standing over their shoulder? And perhaps most importantly, do they actually want to grow? Nobody needs a partner who’s already wealthy, has their entire career figured out, or never makes mistakes. But most people do want somebody who takes their future seriously. And to be fair, missing one interview doesn’t automatically reveal somebody’s entire character. There could be anxiety, personal struggles, or circumstances that deserve understanding. What matters is whether they acknowledge what happened, take responsibility, and make a genuine effort to move forward. Because supporting somebody through a hard season is one thing. Feeling like you have to become their parent, personal assistant, and motivational speaker just to get them to participate in their own life is something completely different. And that’s why dating intentionally means paying attention to more than chemistry and romantic gestures. Pay attention to how somebody handles responsibility, disappointment, opportunities, and the promises they make to themselves. Because you’re not just choosing somebody to fall in love with. You’re choosing somebody whose decisions will eventually affect your future too.
