@balancedmindsedu: I’ll admit it: “unschooling” used to sound a little wild to me. 😅 No curriculum? No tests? Kids following their own interests? My teacher brain had QUESTIONS. But the more I learn about it, the more I wonder: How much of what we think kids NEED to learn is actually about learning… and how much is just what we’re used to school looking like? I still have questions. Especially about foundational skills, structure, and what happens when learning isn’t interesting. But I’m curious enough to keep digging. 👇 If you unschool…or have tried it: tell me what people get wrong about it. And if your immediate reaction is ABSOLUTELY NOT 😂 tell me why. #Unschooling #AlternativeEducation #Homeschooling #EducationReform #BalancedMinds
I have a 5th grader in my class who was basically “unschooled” (was virtual schooled but the program follows unschool beliefs) until this year- she can’t read, form letters, knows very basic math. She has no concept of a schedule. We are 3 months into school and she asks me daily “Mrs what are we doing now?” We do the same thing everyday. No my children will not be unschooled.

Yeah, I saw a documentary on people who were "Unschooling" their children. It involved a seven-year-old who could barely form legible letters and him not being able to spell anything harder than the word cat. I think traditional schools got that one beat.

I get the appeal but need the structure. How could one apply it in a public school environment effectively?
