On the evening of Oct. 17, protesters in Tirana torched part of the High Court, Albania's supreme court, as clashes with police went into a fifth straight day. The entrance of a Bank of Albania building was burned too. Police responded with tear gas, water cannons and rubber bullets. This wave began on Oct. 13 with students angry about high tuition fees, poor conditions at universities and a lack of jobs. Crowds want Prime Minister Edi Rama, in power since 2013, to resign. He has refused.
"These are foreign hands that do not wish for Albania to be at peace," Rama said on Oct. 16. By Oct. 18, the Health Ministry had counted 272 people injured, 169 of them police officers. The anger has been building since May, when protests began against a luxury resort project linked to Ivanka Trump and her husband, Jared Kushner. Kushner and his partners want to build on Sazan, an uninhabited former military island, and along the nearby Zvërnec coast, part of a protected wetland where migrating flamingos, seals and sea turtles live. Protesters have carried pink flamingos and chanted "Albania is not for sale." The movement is known as the Flamingo Revolution. In May, barbed wire went up on the beach at Zvërnec, and private security guards were filmed dragging a protester across the sand. The fence has since been removed. Villagers say the land is theirs. A court sided with them in 2013, but the man who sold the land appealed, and the case is still open. Prosecutors suspect him of using forged deeds, which he denies. They have made no allegation against Kushner, who says the land was bought in a private sale under Albanian law.
